Adam Goldman Biography

Adam Goldman is a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning American journalist. He received the award for covering the New York Police Department’s spying program that monitored daily life in Muslim communities and for his coverage of the Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

Adam Goldman has been a reporter with the national security team at the Washington Post from 2013 to 2016. He joined the New York Times in August 2016 where he covers the FBI and counterterrorism.

Goldman graduated from the University of Maryland in 1995 and has written the book Enemies Within with Matt Apuzzo.

How/where are you celebrating your birthday and with whom? “Heading to the beach with the family, to an undisclosed spot along the coast of North Carolina. Probably have some birthday cake. One not of my choosing.”

How did you get your start in journalism? “Got a job at a little newspaper called The Daily Progress in Charlottesville, Va. I covered city hall for $8 an hour.”

What’s an interesting book/article you’re reading now or finished? And why? “‘Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the F.B.I.,’ by David Grann. I cover the FBI. It’s a great read about the early bureau.”

What is a trend going on in the U.S. or abroad that doesn’t get enough attention? “I have identified one important trend but writing a story about it.”

How is the Trump presidency going? “Trump’s presidency is great — at least for the NYT.”

What’s a fun fact that people in Washington might not know about you? “I share a birthday with the son of my colleague Matt Apuzzo.”

What’s a typical day look like? “A lot of failures.”

Adam Goldman moved to Israel after college and returned to the U.S. in 1998. Goldman skipped journalism school and instead started to work at newspapers in Virginia and Alabama where he covered police officers and city hall.

He joined the Associated Press (AP) Las Vegas bureau in 2002. At AP Goldman covered gambling and tourism in Las Vegas. He moved to New York as an assignment reporter in 2005 and covered many breaking stories such as a Miracle on the Hudson and an attempted 2009 plot to bomb the subway system.

Adam Goldman reports on the F.B.I. for The New York Times and was part of a team that won a Pulitzer Prize in 2018 for national reporting on Russia’s meddling in the presidential election.

Previously, he covered national security for The Washington Post and worked on the investigative team at The Associated Press, where he and his colleagues revealed the New York Police Department’s Muslim spying programs.

Their reporting on the department won the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting. Adam is the coauthor of “Enemies Within: Inside the NYPD’s Secret Spying Unit and bin Laden’s Final Plot Against America.” He lives in Washington.

I’m thrilled to announce that Adam Goldman will be joining the Washington Bureau to cover the FBI.

Adam has covered terrorism and national security for The Washington Post since December 2013. He has helped break many stories while at The Post, including the capture of Ahmed Abu Khattala, who was charged in the attack on the U.S. diplomatic facility in Benghazi.

With another colleague, he unmasked the terrorist known as Jihadi John and then later broke the news about his demise. He has written extensively about the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay.

Before joining the Post, Adam was on The Associated Press investigative team in Washington, D.C., where he also focused on national security. Previously, he worked in New York and Las Vegas for the AP and newspapers in Virginia and Alabama.

He is the recipient of several journalism awards, including the 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting, which he shared with Matt Apuzzo and two others. He has also won the Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting and a George Polk Award.

Along with Matt Apuzzo, Adam coauthored “Enemies Within: Inside the NYPD’s Secret Spying Unit and bin Laden’s Final Plot Against America.”

Adam lives in Washington with his wife Allison, an editor at Businessweek magazine, and two children, Gideon and Clea (short for Themistocles). He is a graduate of the University of Maryland. He is very approachable.

Adam Goldman offers more than 25 years of experience in the development and implementation of legislative, communications, political and reputation enhancement and management strategies.

Prior to Ironclad Partners, he was president and founder of Windmill Consulting and lobbied for clients such as Google, Uber, DJI Technology, Wal-Mart and Darden Restaurants. Before Windmill, he was a principal of Capital Partners Consulting, where he worked for Google, Uber, Tesla, Wal-Mart, Darden Restaurants and Murphy Oil Corporation.

Adam also served as president of The Goldman Group where he led communications efforts, managed crises and assisted with the reputation of an international sporting event. In addition, he created the strategy for and led the execution of, the communications and grassroots plans for the world’s first theme park designed for people with special needs and disabilities.

Before founding The Goldman Group, Adam spent five-and-a-half years at Public Strategies, Inc. working with a broad range of clients, including one of the world’s largest communications and entertainment providers, a Fortune 5 computer manufacturer, a Fortune 5 retailer and an association representing more than a dozen electric utility companies.

Adam spent 10 years working for President George W. Bush, culminating in a White House position as special assistant to the president and deputy director of the Office of Public Liaison. He served as the liaison between the Bush Administration and the business and Jewish communities, helping communicate key issues among all groups.

He also worked with coalitions and congressional staff to pass key federal legislation, including Trade Promotion Authority and the Jobs and Growth Act of 2003.

Adam graduated from St. Mary’s School of Law in 1998 and The University of Texas at Austin in 1994. He is involved in the community, lending his time and talent to numerous organizations; he is a founding member of the Dell Children’s Trust, has been a board member on the Jewish Community Center Austin and is involved with Dell Children’s Council.
