Ben Heppner, an internationally renowned dramatic tenor, has captivated audiences worldwide with his powerful performances. With a remarkable career spanning opera stages and concert halls, he is celebrated for his resplendent voice, exceptional musicianship, and warm connection with his listeners. He has set new standards in his demanding repertoire through his opera performances, collaborations with top orchestras, prestigious recitals, and acclaimed recordings.
Heppner’s musical journey began at the University of British Columbia, where he studied music. His talent gained national recognition when he won the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Talent Festival in 1979.
In 1998, CBC Television showcased him in an hour-long special, “SOMETHING SPECIAL,” providing a glimpse into the artist’s life. He also achieved significant milestones, winning the Metropolitan Opera auditions in 1988 and receiving Grammy® Awards in 1998 and 2001 for his outstanding recordings.
As a Companion of the Order of Canada, Heppner holds a prominent place in the country’s cultural landscape. In his current role, he brings his extraordinary voice to CBC Radio, hosting “SATURDAY AFTERNOON AT THE OPERA,” where he presents the finest opera productions and recordings from across the globe. Additionally, he shares his passion for classical music and backstage anecdotes in the program “BACKSTAGE.”
Beyond the stage and radio, Ben Heppner enjoys a fulfilling life in Toronto with his wife, surrounded by their three grown children and five beloved grandchildren. During leisure moments, he cherishes sipping coffee on the deck and embarking on countryside adventures on his motorcycle.
