Bob Herbert (Robert Herbert) is an American journalist and commentator born on 7th March 1945 in Brooklyn, New York City, New York, U.S. He is a former liberal op-ed columnist for The New York Times (1993 – 2011) and a fellow at Demos, a progressive think tank.

Bob began his career in journalism in 1970 as a reporter for The Star-Ledger in Newark, New Jersey. In 1973 he became the publication’s night city editor. In 1976 he joined New York Daily News as a reporter and an editor. He later joined the network’s editorial board and became one of its columnists until 1985.

Bob was a founding panelist of Sunday Edition, a weekly discussion show that aired on the New York affiliate of the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS). He also served as the host of the weekly current-affairs show Hotline on New York public television.

In 1991 he joined the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) as a national correspondent for The Today Show, a morning news program, and the NBC Nightly News a position she held until 1993.

In 1993 he joined The New York Times as an op-ed columnist where he wrote about politics, urban affairs, and social trends until 2011. He later became a fellow at Demos, a progressive think tank. He also began writing for The American Prospect magazine.
