Matthews is a graduate of La Salle College High School and the College of the Holy Cross. He also studied economics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and attended Harvard University’s Institute of Politics.

Matthews served as the program’s moderator and was joined each week by a rotating panel of four journalists. Andrea Mitchell and Chuck Todd, both of NBC News, occasionally filled in for Matthews.

Although Matthews was also the host of MSNBC’s Hardball with Chris Matthews, the two programs did not share staff outside of Matthews or editorial input, other than being recorded at NBC’s Washington facility. The show was converted to a high-definition presentation in April 2013.

In December 2017, several news outlets reported that Matthews had been accused by a female production assistant on his program in 1999 of making inappropriate jokes and comments. Matthews was officially reprimanded by his employer, CNBC, and his accuser was awarded a $40,000 severance package settlement.

In 2002, Matthews was hospitalized with malaria, which he likely contracted during one of his visits to Africa. He has also had other health problems, including diabetes (which he disclosed on the Hardball broadcast of December 7, 2009) and pneumonia.

Matthews is a lifelong Philadelphia Phillies fan, which he says is “a part of his soul.” On May 4, 2014, Matthews was the commencement speaker at Ohio State University.
