Darsha Nelson, an Arkansas native, joined the NewsCenter1 team in November 2020, stepping into her role as a talented Multimedia Journalist.
Following high school, Darsha embarked on an exciting journey by living and working in Berlin, Germany. Her time abroad afforded her the opportunity to explore various European countries, including Sweden, Poland, Italy, Spain, and the Czech Republic.
Fueling her passion for travel, she continued to visit other intriguing destinations like Austria, Ireland, the United Arab Emirates, and even accomplished an impressive trek to Mount Everest Base Camp in Nepal, conquering the summit of Kala Patthar (18,514’).
She pursued her education at the University of Arkansas, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with concentrations in Communications, German, and History. During her time at the U of A, Darsha actively engaged as an international student mentor and interned with the U.S. Department of State Bureau of African Affairs. Notably, she also showcased her talents with the Razorback Color Guard, performing at football games and events nationwide.
Since 2016, Darsha has been fully immersed in the Black Hills community, with previous work experiences at iconic places like Mount Rushmore and the Pennington County Treasurer’s Office. However, her ultimate dream came true when she secured her coveted journalism position at NC1. Outside of her professional life, she formerly engaged in roller derby as a member of the Black Hills Wildfire and practiced Capoeira Regional alongside her brother, Ian.
Darsha has diverse interests, including a deep admiration for Joss Whedon’s iconic show Firefly, a fervent support for the New York Rangers hockey team, and a keen following of YouTuber Philip DeFranco. While she may not excel in the culinary arts, she makes up for it with her impressive skill in concocting a delicious Harvey Wallbanger cocktail. When asked about her dream celebrity encounter, she eagerly named Mariska Hargitay.
In South Dakota, Darsha’s life took another meaningful turn when she met her husband, Devin, in 2017, and they tied the knot a year later. However, Mario Kart seems to be a competitive area in their relationship, as Devin never lets her win. They currently reside in Box Elder, sharing their home with their three delightfully eccentric cats and an impressive collection of houseplants that could rival any horticultural enthusiast.
