Dr. Greg Postel, a native of Philadelphia and raised in Princeton, New Jersey, has had a lifelong passion for weather. From a young age, he was captivated by the everyday elements of the sky rather than any specific storm.

The wind rustling through trees fascinated him, and he would spend hours watching the anemometer dial in his room, pondering how high it would go. Even as an infant, afternoon naps on the back porch were filled with wonderment that contributed to his love for meteorology.

Growing up, Dr. Postel had the privilege of living near a renowned weather historian, David Ludlum, who mentored him and shared enthralling stories of past weather events. Ludlum not only inspired Greg but also advised him to focus on mathematics and physics in college, with plans to pursue graduate studies in meteorology.

Following this guidance, Greg obtained a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics and went on to earn an M.S. and Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. During his time there, he eagerly delved into a broad range of meteorological studies, often traveling great distances to track tornadoes and hurricanes alongside experts in the field. His early experiences in storm chasing were invaluable, including his brief time as an undergraduate at the University of Oklahoma in the late 1980s.

Dr. Postel’s deep interest in tropical weather led him to a post-doctoral scientist position in Wisconsin, where he specialized in studying the formation of tropical cyclones originating from African wave disturbances.

Following this phase of his career, he spent ten years in the weather derivatives sector, which eventually brought him and his family to Kansas City, a place he now considers home. There, he focused on weather-risk management operations, with a particular emphasis on weather predictability and forecast uncertainty.

More recently, Dr. Postel served as the “Tropical Weather Expert” for the Washington Post’s Capital Weather Gang and worked as an on-camera meteorologist in Lawrence, Kansas.

Outside of his professional pursuits, Dr. Postel enjoys traveling, accompanying his daughter to swim meets, and indulging in his passion for playing the drums at maximum volume.

Dr. Greg Postel currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia, and his educational background includes an M.S. and Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
