Kathy Rushlow holds the esteemed position of Senior Producer of newscasts at NPR, taking charge of all the newscasts aired during “Morning Edition” since December 2011. The award-winning newscasts stand as the most-listened-to programming on NPR, reaching over 28 million broadcast listeners each week, and millions more through platforms like NPR One, Alexa, and Siri.
On a daily basis, Rushlow oversees the creation of live newscasts every half-hour between 5 am and 11 am, carefully curating and determining the news to be covered, coordinating with NPR and freelance reporters, monitoring social media, liaising with NPR editors, and leading a talented six-person staff, ensuring the latest and most accurate news reaches the audience throughout “Morning Edition.”
Since the fall of 2018, Rushlow has also been an integral part of the video team responsible for delivering the newscasts via the Amazon Echo Show, embracing innovative ways to reach NPR’s audience.
Throughout her impressive career, Kathy Rushlow has been involved in producing newscasts during significant breaking news events, leaving a lasting impact. Noteworthy moments include the 1999 Columbine school shootings, the 2003 Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, the 2013 Navy Yard shooting, and the 2017 Inauguration of Donald Trump.
Kathy’s journey at NPR began in 1995, when she joined as a temporary assistant producer in newscasts. Prior to her tenure at NPR, she honed her skills in producing and editing breaking news at several commercial radio newsrooms. Over the years, she has worked all shifts in newscasts, demonstrating her versatility and dedication to the craft, ultimately leading her to her current role as a producer for “Morning Edition.”
Kathy Rushlow values her interactions with extraordinary journalists throughout her career, including luminaries such as Carl Kasell, Ann Taylor, Craig Windham, Nora Raum, Barbara Klein, and Giles Snyder, and presently, Korva Coleman and Dave Mattingly, who serve as NPR’s two “Morning Edition” newscast anchors. Despite the early morning starts, one of her favorite aspects of the job is connecting with NPR’s foreign correspondents around the world, gaining insight into global events before the sun rises in Washington.
Kathy earned her B.A. in broadcast communications/film from the University of Maryland, College Park, and later pursued a master’s in education from the University of Virginia in 2008. Her commitment to the community is further evident through her membership in the DAR since 2017, showcasing her dedication to service and enriching the field of journalism.
