KEITH THOMPSON Biography and Career

Chief meteorologist Keith Thompson of NEWSCHANNEL 3 understands the striking similarities between life on the Atlantic Coast of Florida and living in West Michigan.

Being a native of Jacksonville, Florida, Keith grew up keenly observing the skies and witnessing severe weather events in the northern part of the state, an experience that proves valuable in his forecasting duties for WEATHER FIRST on NEWSCHANNEL 3 at 5, 5:30, 6, and 11.

Keith’s educational journey includes a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harding University in Arkansas and post-graduate studies in Meteorology at Mississippi State University. His broadcast career started in Florida, where he gained hands-on experience as a news reporter, anchor, and weather anchor at WCJB-TV in Gainesville. In 1989, he joined the NEWS 3 team and assumed the role of chief meteorologist in 1996.

Beyond his role on television, Keith takes pleasure in interacting with school groups, answering curious students’ questions about weather, and making science engaging for young minds. Additionally, he actively serves as co-chair of the Southwest Michigan Campaign of the United Negro College Fund. Keith is a member of both the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association.

Known for his sense of humor, Keith brings light-heartedness to the NEWSCHANNEL 3 team, always ready with a joke or encouraging word, and maintaining a perspective that doesn’t take himself too seriously—a valuable trait when trying to forecast Michigan weather. In his leisure time, he indulges in his passion for sports, particularly ice hockey and auto racing. During quieter moments, Keith finds solace in reading.

Keith has made his home in the Kalamazoo area, contributing to the community with his expertise and cheerful demeanor.
