To me, Michael Moloney represents everything good about Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. He was energetic, critical of his own process, (usually) responsive to the desires of the clients, and even brought his own dog assistant to help him out. Since the end of the show, Moloney has appeared in a few other home renovation specials. But mostly, he’s been focused on running his own home decorating stores. This doesn’t mean he’s out of the spotlight for good, though. Let’s look at Michael Moloney’s career to date, to see where he might go from here.
From Fashion to Home Design
Michael Moloney was born on December 14, 1963 in Palos Verdes, California. Like many people on the brink of celebrity, not much is known about his childhood or education. He started working in fashion in the 80s, but started doing home-design in the mid-90s. He opened two stores in California, Le Garage and Maison Luxe, which both sold a mixture of modern home furnishing and antiques.
Before breaking into television, Moloney had his home featured in several magazines, including People. From there, he was a featured designer on Clean House, on the briefly-lived Style Network. Then, in 2003, he was cast to be a designer for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
Extreme Home Makeover started as a spin-off of Extreme Makeover, another ABC show. However, Home Edition was significantly more popular than the original series, and outlasted it by several years. The basic premise was that the producers would find a family recently hit by hardship, and send them on a week-long vacation. While they were gone, Ty Pennington (from Trading Spaces) came to their home, and with his team of designers, renovate the home.
Sometimes the renovations were relatively simple, and other times the property was in such bad shape the original house would be torn down and a new one rebuilt. Michael Moloney worked as an interior designer for the show, from the premiere until the season finale.
Through the run of the show, Michael and his dog, Ricky the Design Dog, helped design several dozen homes. He became one of the audience’s favorite designers, and he was able to use this minor celebrity to appear on several other shows.
He was a guest on The View, helped host the Paws for Style canine fashion show, and was a contestant on Dancing with the Stars. Michael Moloney also competed as a celebrity contestant on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, for their Extreme Makeover: Home Edition special.
When Extreme Home Makeover ended in 2012, it had inspired numerous international spinoffs, finishing with relatively strong ratings here in America. There was occasional controversy about how the show handled things, but overall, fans were pleased.
What’s Michael Moloney Doing Now in 2018 – Recent Updates
Since the end of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Michael Moloney has helped several other families design something special for their home. In 2013 and 2014, he was a judge for The Great Christmas Light Fight on ABC, where four families competed to see who could create the most spectacular Christmas display at their home. Also in 2014, Moloney was a judge on The Great Halloween Fright Fight. Almost identical in format, the show was about Halloween decorations.
Most recently, Moloney has focused on his other home decorating businesses. He created the M2 line of furniture, largely inspired by the styles he developed through the run of Extreme Home Makeover. He’s also involved in promoting low-carbohydrate diets, and recently taken a more active role in representing the LGBT+ community online. Although not notably involved in politics, Michael Moloney has used his Twitter to endorse Hillary Clinton for this year’s presidential election, and been repeatedly critical of Donald Trump.
In lighter news, Moloney continues to be involved in canine fashion shows, raising money for regional Humane Societies.
