Phil Black is an esteemed International Correspondent based at CNN’s London bureau, showcasing his expertise in reporting on global affairs.
Before his assignment in London, Black served as CNN International’s Russia correspondent, stationed in Moscow. During his time there, he covered several high-profile stories from the region, including Vladimir Putin’s re-election as president and the controversial arrest and detainment of the protest punk group Pussy Riot.
Black has played a pivotal role in CNN’s coverage of the crisis in Ukraine, offering on-the-ground reporting from the Maidan protests in Kiev and providing insights into the clashes between pro-Russian rebels and government forces in Donetsk. He was also present at the crash site of the downed Flight MH17, delivering comprehensive coverage of the incident and its aftermath. Black’s reporting on these events, as well as the shooting of an anti-government protester in Independence Square, earned him recognition at the 2014 AIB awards.
His association with CNN International began in April 2007 when he joined as a freelance reporter. Since then, he has worked on numerous impactful stories for the network, ranging from the Finnish classroom shootings and the McCartney-Mills divorce hearings to the attempted London terror attacks, the search for Madeleine McCann, and the Princess Diana inquest.
Prior to his tenure at CNN International, Black spent seven years as a correspondent on Australia’s highest-rated news program, Seven News, contributing to its success. He covered significant events, including reporting on the Asian Tsunami from Sri Lanka. His career in journalism began as a researcher on Australia’s Channel Nine program, “Getaway,” where he assisted with logistical planning for travel stories worldwide. Over the years, Black progressed from a producer to a reporter, eventually transitioning into his first correspondent role with Seven News. With over 10 years of reporting and producing experience, Black brings a wealth of expertise to his work.
Black, an Australian national, pursued an associate diploma in Journalism at Macleay College in Sydney, further honing his skills in the field.
