Rudi Bakhtiar Biography

Rudi Bakhtiar is an Iranian American journalist, and producer for Reuters in Washington, D.C. She is the first Iranian American journalist to anchor a prime time news hour in the United States, called “CNN Headline News Tonight”.

Rudi has over a decade experience working for major international news outlets CNN and Fox News Channel.
She was the Director of Communications for the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran. She also serves as senior advisor at Voice of America. Currently, she works for Reuters and Radio Free Europe.

Rudi attended the University of California, Los Angeles and graduated in 1990 receiving a bachelor of science in biology. She was planning to be a dentist. She was also accepted to New York University Dental School but she had reservations about going to dental school. She then studied architecture at the Career Discovery Program at the Harvard School of Design in addition.

Rudi is a fan of the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Lakers sports teams. She also served as an official festival judge for the Noor Iranian Film Festival in Los Angeles.

Bakhtiar was born to Iranian immigrants of Bakhtiari heritage. She has a younger brother and younger sister. Her father died of oropharyngeal cancer in 2005. Shapour Bakhtiar is Rudi’s father’s uncle, the last prime minister of Iran under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. Her great aunt was the Shah of Iran’s second wife (Soraya Esfandiary). Rudi’s great-grandfather is named Sardar Jang.

At the age of two, her family moved from Fresno, California, to Los Angeles. Her family moved back to Iran when she was five. She was raised in Iran until the 1979 Iranian Revolution when her family moved back to the United States when she was 17. Bakhtiar loved to ride horses as a child.

Bakhtiar also anchored the start of CNN’s Headline News coverage of the September 11 attacks. She left CNN to care for her dying father after almost 10 years in cable news.

She was reporting on major international news stories such as the Ahmadinejad-al-Maliki summit in Tehran in September 2006 and also the trial and execution of Saddam Hussein later that year. Fox News terminated its contract with Bakhtiar in 2007 after a complaint of alleged sexual harassment.

In 2008 She switched careers to become the first director of public relations for the Public Affairs Alliance of Iranian Americans. It is an organization dedicated to building an inclusive and representative voice in the public and political arena for Iranian Americans.

There, Rudi produced minidocumentaries called “Profiles of Iranian Americans” which focused on the lives of successful Iranian Americans. She then created and produced the organization’s signature star-studded community event “Passing the Torch of Success. This was before being pushed out of the organization owing to her strong stance on Iran’s human rights violations.

Rudi testified before the Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee on Iran’s human rights crisis in May 2011, claiming under the leadership of Ayatollah Khamenei “Iran has become one of the worst violators of human rights in the world…egregiously violating virtually every article of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, of which Iran is a member state.”

Rudi complained to Fox News about alleged sexual harassment in 2007 by Brian Wilson prior to his promotion to Washington bureau chief. In public reports published in July 2016, Brian denies harassing Rudi.
This led to Fox News terminating her contract the same year.
Although Bakhtiar agreed in her settlement not to speak of her experience at Fox News, she then decided to speak in the wake of a sexual harassment lawsuit filed against Fox News CEO Roger Ailes by Gretchen Carlson in July 2016.

Flynn Intel Group 

Rudi worked on an unfinished documentary on Turkey after the failed coup attempt. This was before Michael Flynn was officially named National Security Advisor for President Donald Trump.

A Turkish businessman had paid the Flynn Intel Group, a lobbying group in the US, more than a half a million dollars. It was for the making of the film but he was adamant no one knew who they were. Rudi complained she was not being given the opportunity to show a balanced view of the events, and said that the documentary was going to destroy Gülen, who was a Turkish cleric whom Erdogan would like to see extradited to Turkey, from the US.

In June 2017, Rudi said she had not been contacted by people investigating Mr. Flynn. By November 2017, it had been reported that FBI agents investigating Flynn had contacted her.
