She was born in Ohio to parents Becky and Scott Shookman, She has a sister named Kimberly Shookman. Sara studied at the Manchester High School in Ohio before graduating with a degree in journalism from Ohio University. She was the Valedictorian of her class in high school as well as president of the school science club. During her time in Ohio University, She interned at WKYC.

she began her career by working in Athens, Ohio at WOUB and eventually moved to Knoxville Tennessee where she worked at WVLT as both a reporter and a news anchor. she was officially recognized as on of the best television reporters in Tennessee by the Tennessee Associated Press.

When Ariel Castro was arrested, Sara covered the story extensively and through her tenacity and top notch journalism, the team at WKYC was awarded an Emmy Award for the best news cast of 2013.
