He is known for starring as Charles “Haywire” Patoshik in the Fox television series Prison Break (2005–2007) and as Monroe in the NBC television series Grimm (2011–2017). He is named after an ancestor, the 19th century physician and author Silas Weir Mitchell.

He is one of the five children (three girls and two boys) born to his stockbroker father and homemaker mother and he was raised in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, just a little distance from his birthplace. His passion for the stage and screen was firmly posited in him after he participated in a production of Hansel and Gretel in third grade.
When the time came for him to acquire formal education, Silas Weir enrolled at The Montgomery Country Day School, formerly in Gladwyne PA for his elementary school before proceeding to a college-preparatory boarding school, St. Paul’s School in Concord, New Hampshire, where he graduated from in 1987. Four years later, he became a graduate of Brown University, Rhode Island, where he majored in Theatre and Religion. Following his graduation, he acted in minor theatre productions for sometime in New York City after which he left to further his studies.
He pitched his tent with the University of California San Diego where he enrolled in their Master of Fine Arts program, graduating in 1995. Therein, he wrote a Masters thesis titled What We Make Is Not Ours. Then, the time came for him to fully embark on his acting sojourn.

Silas plays “Charles Patoshik” also known as “Haywire” was one of the Fox River Eight who suffers from mental illness. Patoshik has a doctorate degree in mathematics from Harvard. He won four mathematician of the year awards. He began to exhibit signs of mental illness during his intense studies. Eventually he snapped, killing both of his parents with a shotgun. He had no history of violent behavior prior to this, and offered no motive for the crime (he claimed to not remember doing it at all).
He was diagnosed as having schizoaffective disorder with bipolar tendencies and was committed to the Psychiatric Ward of Fox River, where he earned the nickname “Haywire”. He also has a fear of crowds. While talking to Haywire, Mahone said to him, “I know you killed your parents because they hurt you, and I know you killed that guy Yesterday because he was hurting Sasha, but what you did… It was wrong.” This statement shows that Charles lived in an abusive house-hold, which could have been the main contributing factor for his mental illness.

Ken has a prior criminal record consisting of a minor assault charge. He also killed two people, and attempted to kill a third.The first person that he killed was a drug dealer. He ran over him with his car and stole his stash of cocaine.
After that, Ken began sleeping with his boss’ wife, causing her husband to become abusive. He then killed the husband by pushing him down a flight of stairs and making it look like an accident. This resulted in Ken losing his job, and his girlfriend breaking up with him. When Ken’s mother, who was in a retirement home, had a close encounter with petty burglar, John Henry, he tried to kill him and make it look like the work of the Bay Harbor Butcher.
