Brunt is a Canadian journalist currently co-hosting Writers Bloc alongside Jeff Blair and Richard Deitsch and working as a columnist for sportsnet.ca, Brunt covers a wide range of sports on a daily basis, including baseball, boxing and hockey.
With more than 30 years of experience in sports media, author and award-winning journalist Stephen Brunt has seen and covered it all.
Beginning his career in journalism as an intern for The Globe and Mail in 1982, Brunt quickly rose through the ranks in the newsroom. Notably, he was the first Canadian journalist to interview a young Mike Tyson when the boxer was only 18 years old, and in 1989 the Hamilton, ON native won a Michener Award for public service journalism following his series on negligence and corruption in boxing.
Nominated for several National Newspaper Awards, Brunt also has written seven stand-out books on the world of sports, including Canadian #1 bestseller Searching For Bobby Orr, national bestseller Gretzky’s Tears, and Facing Ali – which was named one of the 10 best sports books of year by Sports Illustrated and later made into a documentary.
Brunt also produced the documentary The Last Round: Chuvalo vs. Ali in 2003, winning the Special Jury Prize at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival in 2003, and was a finalist for the Genie Award (now Canadian Screen Awards) as best feature length documentary.
In 2010, Brunt’s video essay for Canada’s Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games won the Gemini Award for best sports feature.
While boxing has remained one of his true passions, Brunt’s esteemed career has taken him across the globe covering several of the largest sporting events to ever take place, including the Olympics, FIFA World Cup, Super Bowl, Stanley Cup Final, Wold Series and more.
He currently lives in his hometown of Hamilton, ON with his wife and spends his summers in Winterhouse Brook, NL.
