Tim Cook is an American business executive and industrial engineer from Alabama. He is the Chief Executive Officer of Apple Inc., and had served as the company’s Chief Operating Officer previously under its founder Steve Jobs. Cook joined Apple as a senior vice president for worldwide operations in March 1998, and then became the Executive Vice President for worldwide sales and operations.

Post his graduation from Auburn University, Cook spent 12 years in IBM’s personal computer business. He ended up serving as the director of North American fulfillment. Tim Cook joined Apple Inc. in 1998 after Steve jobs asked him to join the company. In a commencement speech at Auburn University, Cook said he decided to join Apple the first time he met Jobs.
He started as the Senior Vice president for worldwide operations. He closed factories and warehouses, exchanging them with contract manufacturers. This led to a reduction in the company’s inventory from months to days. His group decided to invest in long-term deals such as advance investment in flash memory from 2005 onward as they predicted its importance. This assured there was a stable supply of what became a key iPod Nano, then iPhone and iPad component. Competitors at Hewlett-Packard, describing their cancelled TouchPad tablet computer, later said that it was made from “cast-off reject iPad parts.”
Cook’s efforts were credited with keeping costs under control, combined with the company’s design and marketing savvy, generated huge profits. He was promoted to lead operations in January 2007 and in 2009 served as Chief Executive as Steve Jobs was away on a leave of absence for health related issues.
In January 2011, Jobs requested a third medical leave of absence which was approved by Apple’s board of directors. This left Cook in charge of most of Apple’s day-to-day operations, while Jobs made most major decisions. On 24th August 2011, Tim Cook was named as Apple’s Chief Executive Officer after Jobs resigned as the CEO to become the chairman of the board. However, on October 5, 2011, six weeks later, Jobs passed on as a result of complications from pancreatic cancer.
Cook made his first major changes to the company’s executive team on October 29, 2012. These changes occurred after the third quarter of the fiscal year, when revenues and profits grew less than predicted.
In May 2013, he said that his leadership at Apple focuses on people, strategy, and execution. Going on to explain, he said, “If you get those three right the world is a great place.” The incorporated company has also increased its donations to charity since Cook took over from Steve Jobs. In 2013, Lisa Jackson, formerly the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, was hired by Cook to assist Apple with the development of its renewable energy activities.

Cook lives in a relatively modest home in Palo Alto, California. It is a 2,400-square-foot house with four bedrooms and boasts of a tiny yard and small adjunct section of real estate in the back. He bought the condo back in 2010 for $1.9 million.
