Wendy Mesley Biography
Mesley is a Canadian journalist currently serving as the host of CBC News The Weekly with Wendy Mesley, which airs Sundays at 11 a.m. (12 AT, 12:30 NT) on CBC and 11 a.m. ET on CBC News Network. The 30-minute program provides a deeper understanding of what’s happening in the world each week by illuminating the influences driving it and the influencers pushing the buttons and pulling the strings. From political pressure and corporate interests, to technological manipulation and old-fashioned spin, Mesley reveals what’s really at play behind the big stories of the day.
Mesley hosted CBC’s flagship news program The National on Friday and Sunday evenings on and off over a period of 25 years. She began her broadcast journalism career in Quebec, covering the first referendum on sovereignty and some of the most fascinating politicians of our times, such as Rene Levesque and Pierre Trudeau. In 1985, Mesley moved to Ottawa as the CBC’s first female correspondent to cover the prime minister from the parliamentary press gallery for CBC’s The National.
In 1994, she helped create and hosted CBC’s Gemini Award-winning Undercurrents, a program that brought the traditional hard reporting of a current affairs show to media culture. More recently, she co-hosted Marketplace, CBC’s award-winning prime-time investigative consumer show.
Mesley has won three Gemini Awards for her work on Marketplace and Undercurrents, and this year won Best News Host or Interviewer at the Canadian Screen Awards. She was honoured in 2006 with the John Drainie Award, for her contribution to Canadian broadcasting.
